In June 2002 the ruangrupa artists’ initiative in Jakarta hosted the RAIN partners meeting where artists from all the initiatives and former participants, mentors and staff at the Rijksakademie met together.
The theme of the meeting was “strategies of artists (initiatives) whereby they can relate to the socio-political context in which they work”.
With all the initiatives, which stem partly from the country’s political-economic situation, there is a strong engagement with social events in their country. The various contexts, work strategies and the ensuing art were discussed. This produced a highly rich tapestry of contemporary possibilities.
As a result of the outcomes a joint publication is now being prepared that will be issued in the spring of 2004, published by NAI Publishers.
